Day 2: World Premiere Of Djinn, First Uae-Produced Horror Film, Meet Oscar Winning Director Danis Tanovic
After a successful Opening Night, the Festival hits full speed tomorrow, with a packed programme of premieres with many acclaimed and rising talents from around the world in attendance. The highly anticipated world premiere of UAE-produced Djinn, the latest film from legendary horror director Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is just one of the red carpet screenings on day 2 at ADFF. The cast and crew of Belle (screening at 9pm), a sumptuous period drama about the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral who is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle, will also take to the red carpet at Emirates Palace.
On the red carpet at 17:30 for DJINN (screening at 6pm) look for actor Khalid Laith, seen recently in WORLD WAR Z and RED 2, who joins new talents May El Calamawy, and Razane Jammal as the film’s official contingent. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who stars in the title role of BELLE will be joined on the red carpet at 20:30 by fellow cast member Sam Reid and Director Amma Asante.
Oscar winning director Danis Tanovic, from Bosnia, joins ADFF with his latest film, An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker, which won the Jury Grand Prix at the Berlinale earlier this year. Producer Cedomir Kolar will also attend the screening.
Also from Bosnia today For Those Who Can Tell No Lies, from acclaimed Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic, whose earlier film GRBAVICA won a Golden Bear in 2006. Kym Vercoe, who wrote the script and stars as the main character, will attend the screening.
Iraqi-Kurdish director Hisham Zaman returns to ADFF with Before Snowfall. Zaman has previously competed in the Short Film Competition at ADFF and won the Black Pearl Award with BAWKE in 2007.
Algerian Merzak Allouache, this year’s winner of the Variety Middle East Filmmaker of the Year Award will attend the screening of The Rooftops, the only Arab film to screen in international competition this year at the Venice Film Festival. Cast members Akram Djeghim, Mohamed Takerrat and Salima Abada will also attend the screening.
Legendary Indian director M.S. Sathyu attends with his masterpiece, Scorching Winds. UK Director Marc Silver will present his film Who Is Dayani Cristal, as will Pakistani director Bassam Tariq, whose film about street children These Birds Walk screens in the Documentary Competition. THESE BIRDS TALK is the first Oscar submssion from Pakistan in 50 years.
In Showcase section, documentary fans will want to see the Middle East Premiere of AATSINKI: THE STORY OF ARCTIC COWBOYS, a stunningly beautiful film that follows a year in the life of Finnish reindeer herders. Director Jessica Oreck will attend the screening.
The first screenings of films competing in the Emirates film competition also take place today, with two sessions of films from the Short Narrative section.
ADFF TALKS FILM
At 14:30 join a panel of representatives of the main bodies offering funds to Arab film makers will discuss financing opportunities at “Show Me the Money! Meet the Film Funds”, while at 16:30“In Conversation with Daniel SchecHter” offers an opportunity to learn what it is like to work with A-list actors like Jennifer Aniston from the director of the Opening Night film Life Of Crime.
The Abu Dhabi Film Festival runs from October 24 until November 2. The Ceremony for the winners of the Black Pearl Awards will take place on October 31.
