OW"What in the World Are We Doing to Our World?"
Plastic PlanetOriginal Title: Plastic Planet
Director: Werner Boote
Austria | English, German
Format: Digital Betacam
"After the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Ice Age, we now have the Plastic Age," the narrator announces in this wry, alarming look at that most omnipresent, long-lasting of all substances and how it may be taking over our world. Personable director and host Werner Boote, whose grandfather was a director of German company Interplastik-Werke, leads us on a journey from plastic manufacturers in Germany, to a toy-making plant in China; from a plastic-strewn beach in Japan, to the world's largest trash heap in India. He uncovers both the promise of cheap, practical plastic, and its threat - it's alarmingly toxic and takes more than 500 years to disintegrate. Even the eponymous toy plastic globe he buys in Europe and sees being made in Shanghai hides deadly carcinogens. Featuring music by The Orb, Plastic Planet showcases the easy profit - and inevitable loss - of our obsession with plastic. ---Jason Sanders
