The city of Berlin has gone through tremendous changes in the 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and it remains in a state of constant flux. Cinematographers Michael Ballhaus (who was born in Berlin) and Ciro Cappellari have created a heartfelt and poetic cinematic essay that takes a magnifying glass to Germany's capital. For many Berliners, it is the only place to realize their dreams, and in doing so they continually reinvent the city and themselves. Through interviews with celebrities and unknowns alike, the two filmmakers paint a complex portrait of Berlin, while providing insight into the lives of those who call it home. Like the city itself, the film is almost continually in motion, with many of the interviews conducted while the subjects are involved in some sort of movement or in transit. Much more than a mere documentary, In Berlin is a love letter to a vibrant metropolis and its inhabitants.
