Hindi Movies at the ADFF
next two days, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival will screen two eagerly
anticipated Indian films, Murali Nair's Virgin Goat (in
the Narrative Competition) and Tigmanshu Dhulia's Paan Singh
Tomar (Showcase selection).Set in present-day
India,Virgin Goatis a dark
comedy that relates a farmer's obsession to have his female goat
mated. Family issues, bureaucratic red tape and a marauding mob
conspire to turn Kalyan Singh's (Raghubir Yadav) simple journey
into a bizarre and surreal adventure.
Paan Singh Tomar is set in the Chambal
Valley in central India, and based on the true story of a national
sports hero who ruled over the steeplechase event at the Indian
National Games for seven years, and whose record remained unbeaten
for ten years. He was also a patriot, serving with the Indian Army,
before becoming a rebel and wreaking havoc in the Chambal
Tigmanshu Dhulia first learned about Tomar while working on the set
of Bandit Queen in Chambal. He researched the film's
background for two years, interviewing Tomar's surviving family
members, and visiting his native village in Bhind. The film was
shot in Chambal in the actual barracks Tomar lived in.
stars Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) and Mahi Gill
(Dev. D) in the lead roles.
