The List is the story of a man who developed one of the most inspirational and heroic
humanitarian projects in the aftermath of the Iraq War. Since 2007, young American Kirk
Johnson has helped save the lives of hundreds of residents of the war-torn country. In The
List, journalist and documentary filmmaker Beth Murphy follows Johnson’s fight for justice
over the course of four years, bringing a largely unreported reality about the conflict to light.
During the war, thousands of Iraqis risked their lives to assist US forces. In a country where
helping Americans is synonymous for many with being a traitor, these people were soon
targeted by extremists. When US soldiers eventually withdrew from the country, the US
government did next to nothing to protect their allies who had sacrificed so much for them.
Shamelessly abandoned by the invaders, many were attacked, murdered or forced into exile.
A former USAID employee who was involved in the reconstruction of Fallujah, Kirk Johnson
soon realized the seriousness of this humanitarian crisis, and decided to set things right. He
started to compile a list of Iraqi allies in danger, and has since relentlessly fought against
an apathetic American bureaucracy to secure a safe living environment for these former
employees. So far 1500 lives have been saved.
The List is a compelling portrayal of the extraordinary commitment of this courageous man,
whose call for action serves as a powerful reminder of our moral responsibilities as human
