Ai Weiwei is China’s most internationally recognised artist and political activist. He has continually angered Chinese authorities with his daring projects: from a photo of himself flipping the bird at Tiananmen Square to a giant art installation of 100 million hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds, he has skilfully used art to criticise his country’s oppressive system. An effective blogger and Tweeter, he has spoken out against China’s abysmal human rights record. Unsurprisingly, telling the truth has come at a high price.

Clever, courageous, controversial and charismatic, Ai Weiwei is an original man and eccentric dissident, adeptly portrayed by 24-year-old Alison Klayman in her debut documentary. Due in part to the unprecedented access she gained to the artist’s life along with her astonishing timing, the audience becomes an observer to a chilling story as it unfolds. Ai Weiwei, having publicly denounced the Beijing Olympics, was already unpopular with Chinese officials when he started his investigation into the disastrous Sichuan earthquake that occurred in May 2008. Following his Internet post listing more than 5,000 schoolchildren who perished in the earthquake, the audience bears witness as Chinese authorities shut down his blog, beat him up, destroy his studio and hold him in detention. Yet the fight is far from over. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is an account of a fearless existence under continuous threat, told with great intimacy and honesty, featuring a delicate snapshot of contemporary China.
