Jealousy
Jealousy by Philippe GarrelFilmed in black and white, Jealousy is a secretive look at the lives and relationships of a selected number of people living in Paris: a mother, a father, a daughter and a once-upon-a-time actress. The film starts with Clothilde (Rebecca Convenant) crying and begging Louis (Louis Garrel) not to leave her for another woman, a struggling actress called Claudia (Anna Mouglalis). Claudia hasn’t worked for a while and we see her in the first part of the film obsessing over the idea that Louis might leave her and the fact that she can’t live without him.
On the other hand, there is Charlotte, Louis’s daughter, who has witnessed her father leaving her mother for another woman. Charlotte eventually meets her father’s girlfriend as she calls her and ends up having a good time. However, burdened with a sense of guilt she tries her best to hide her feelings of enjoyment from her mother who is also struggling to hide her feelings of jealousy.
In the second part of the film the tables are turned, and we see Louis fighting his feelings of jealousy. Claudia is not happy with her life, she wants more. This leads her to leave Louis for a much more economically stable man. Louis can’t stand the idea of being dumped and reaches the depths of desperation. only when he is hospitalized does he finally realize that Claudia has left him for good.
In Jealousy, Phillip Garrel offers us a window from where we can see the fragility of his characters, their most intimate secrets, their desires and finally, their most hidden fears. Do not miss your chance to see this emotive story of people trying to find a meaning to their lives and their relationships.
