Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Saarsgard star as radical environmentalists in Kelly Reichardt’s ecoterrorism thriller Night Moves. Josh (Eisenberg) is an intense and brooding young activist, no longer satisfied with raising awareness about environmental issues. He’s determined to make his mark and do something big, his aim being to get people talking about the issues that are so urgent to him.
Josh’s cohorts in this nail-biting expedition are his girlfriend Dena (Fanning) and his mentor, Harmon (Saarsgard), a former marine. But, the intricacies involved in pulling off such a major action prove to be more complicated than the three imagined.
Whether we’re supposed to see these young radicals as heroes or villains is a tightrope that Reichardt manages to walk with extraordinary skill, drawing us into the psyches of her carefully realized characters. Working again with writer Jonathan Raymond (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Meeks’ Cutoff ), Reichardt returns to their ongoing obsession with nature as both subject and background, in turn creating a nerve-wracking political and moral drama that forces us to question our own complicity in the troubles of the world around us. Reichardt is one of the most original voices in American independent cinema and with Night Moves she has upped the ante of her previous work with a deeply unsettling and beautifully rendered drama.
