A man with a rough, weatherbeaten face paddles a ramshackle boat through moody mist to a small river island that has formed from soil deposits left behind after the spring melt. This waterway, the Inguri River, which forms the divide between the warring states of Georgia and Abkhazia, and its ephemeral nature are the first of many metaphors to be found in Georgian auteur George Ovashvili’s acclaimed psychological drama, winner of the top prize at the Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The man, seemingly without a home, shuttles old boards and tools up to the island to begin building a hut for shelter while he grows summer corn on the island before it once again washes away. This ritualistic process takes on a new dimension when the man’s pubescent daughter arrives to assist him, but their work still rolls on wordlessly. Their silent days are filled with toil and the occasional interruption from the outside world (when a patrol boat passes by slowly, the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife), but the process becomes mesmerizing thanks to Ovashvili’s and cinematographer Elemer Ragalyi’s rich, artful compositions. When a wounded Georgian soldier is folded into the mix, the dramatic tension that Ovashvili and his fellow scriptwriters have been building so subtly all along is heightened in unexpected ways. —Joel Hoglund
