A rich and vibrant coming together of coming-of-age story and tortured drama, the stylish and enthralling The Wonders manages to reveal something rather special about the ever complex and always emotional passage towards adulthood. Italian writer/director Alice Rohrwacher has followed on from the promise of her debut film Corpo Celeste with a beguiling and rather strange (in a good way) film that benefits from a strong cast and an enthralling central performance from young Romanian/Italian newcomer Alexandra Lungu. She is sheer perfection as young Gelsomina, the oldest daughter of a pair of former student revolutionaries who all live in a crumbling farmhouse. Things take a change of direction when the family blunders into a seaside location shoot for a promotional episode of kitsch local television talent show Il paese delle meraviglie, presented by the feisty Milly Catena (a lovely showy performance by Monica Bellucci). The family’s involvement with Catena and the show helps spin the story in a series of different and quite unexpected directions that blends pastoral imagery, a sense of magical oddness and a message about how communication can divide as well as unite. The film is beautifully shot and the imagery memorable—particularly the use of bees as both something amazing and dangerous—with Rohrwacher dipping into her own family background to construct a beguiling and striking film. —Mark Adams

Young Italian director Alice Rohrwacher draws on her own experiences with The Wonders based on her childhood. She was born in 1982 in Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy. She is a writer and editor, known for Heavenly Body (2011) and Un piccolo spettacolo (2005). Rohrwacher is a new breed of Italian filmmaker, but also one to use her homeland as a leaping-off point for her films. “The region of middle Italy is my homeland,' she has said, “and I wanted to frame a story within a changing landscape.'
