The Polish Bride
The Polish BrideOriginal Title: De poolse bruid
Director: Karim Traïdia
Algeria, Netherlands | Dutch, German, Polish
Anna, an abused young Polish immigrant, manages somehow to escape from the clutches of men who want to force her into prostitution. She turns up, bruised and traumatised, at Henk’s farm. An emotionally worn out Henk has worries of his own, but he takes her in. He doesn’t ask for any explanations, nor does she offer any. Nevertheless, under Henk’s silent care, Anna heals physically and emotionally. In return, she starts taking care of things around the house and brings a positive change to Henk’s otherwise lonely life. Little by little, they grow closer. Initial misgivings give way to trust, and the new found confidence leads to a warm bond even though they do not speak each other’s language. All is well until Anna’s employers catch up with her and threaten Henk to return her to them.
The Polish Bride screened at Rotterdam and Critics’ Week at Cannes and several other festivals around the world and won awards and accolades as one of the top ten best Dutch films of all times. Karim Traïdia successfully blends thriller elements with drama and romance in an understated yet tense and compellingmanner in this rather unusual story of tender and subtle love. The story clearly is themed on the need for people from different cultures to make the effort to understand and treat each other humanely.
