To call Next Goal Wins a straightforward underdog story would be a serious understatement. The documentary follows the exploits of the American Samoa football team who lie dead last in the FIFA world rankings carrying the stigma of officially being the worst team in the world. If this wasn’t already rock bottom enough, the team has also never won a single competitive game, only scored two goals in 17 years and currently holds the world record for heaviest defeat, 0-31 to Australia.
As qualification begins for the 2014 World cup in Brazil, the American Samoa football federation turns to Thomas Rongen. A professional coach and former player, he is faced with the monumental task of bringing together a team for whom embarrassing defeats are the norm and for whom half of the players are not even fit enough to play a full game. Together Thomas and team, including a goalkeeper still haunted by the memory of the infamous 0-31 score line, embark on a journey of agony and ecstasy in their search for redemption.
Directors Steve Jamison and Mike Brett perfectly capture the spirit of the team and the courage and dignity they show in the face of the heaviest of defeats. Next Goal Wins and the American Samoa team embody the true passion that makes football the world’s most beautiful game.
