Ali Mostafa’s first feature City of Life (2009) attracted the attention of viewers. Mostafa did not disappoint their expectations, and with a text based on his idea, the scenario was created by Mohammed Hefzi, who with Paul Babogian formed a work team of executive producers. This road movie tells the story of three childhood friends who went their separate ways over the years, but now decide to revive their relationship. They travel from Abu Dhabi to Beirut to commemorate their friend Hadi who five years earlier had gone to Beirut and became a martyr in the 2006 war against Israeli aggression. They were supposed to accompany him on that visit, but refrained for various reasons. The director depended on three young men who had no experience in acting to form his major cast. But he also recruited a number of stars and filmmakers among his acquaintances and friends to play minor roles, which in itself is a tribute to this film. Many elements of the film address the concerns and circumstances of his heroes, who live in a city of racial diversity. Add in the music, songs and a dose of comedy, and it should prove to be a hit with audiences. —Intishal Al Timimi
